The second-largest industry in the 21st century world...a composite entity of nature, art, architechture, culture, history and commerce.

Tourism simply means travel - the practice of travelling for pleasure or recreation and the guidance or management of tourists as a business. Tourism in the commercial context stands for the totality of activities and phenomena arising from 'travel' and stay of strangers.

A. Karen Ziffer defines tourism as one activity that involves travelling to relatively peaceful or uncontaminated or undisturbed places with the specific objective of studying, admiring and enjoying the scenery and its wild planets and animals as well as any existing cultural aspects found in these areas.

Tourism is entertainment, holiday and means of understanding other people's way of life, culture and tradition. As an industry tourism helps in improving infrastructure, creates employment opportunities, augment foreign exchange earnings, promotes national intigrity and international understanding.

Tourism is a service based industry comprising a number of tangible and intangible components. The tangible elements include transport, foods and beverages, tours, souvenirs and accommodation, while the intangible elements involve education, culture, adventure or simply escape and relaxation.

Tourism consumption comprises the total consumption expenditure made by a visitor or on behalf of a visitor for and during his/her trip and stay at destination.

Forms of Tourism: Tourism can be devided into three categories-

a. Domestic Tourism: When the residents of the country travel within their own country, it is called Domestic Tourism.

b. Inbound Tourism: Inbound tourism involves the non residents of a country travelling in a given country.

c. Outbound Tourism: When the residents of a given country travel another country, it is called outbound tourism.
